Who discovered the New World?

I just watched an interesting 2-hour documentary on Discovery Channel. Before that, I'm going to ask you one question: Who discovered the Americas? Well, are you guessing the Italian explorer and trader, Christopher Columbus? Surprise, surprise! The documentary featured a recent controversial theory put forward by Gavin Menzies which suggests that it was the famous Chinese admiral of the Ming dynasty, Zheng He (or Cheng Ho) along with his impressively large amarda who circumnavigated the globe and discovered the Americas in 1421, which was 71 years ahead of Columbus himself, who reached the New World in 1492. Unfortunately, this theory has found little support among historians. If it's proven to be true, the history of the New World will ceritainly be rewritten, and this means another great achievement was accomplished by the Chinese long before the Westerners did it!

Do you think it's possible? To be honest, I strongly disagree with the fact. Don't you feel it's ridiculous to implicate that Cheng Ho was the first to discovered the Americas? Since he came from China, I can't make myself believe that a Chinese would discover the Americas first, before any Westerners. China is much more distant from the Americas compared to any Western countries, and, the Westerners has invented steamship before any other human beings in the world. Therefore, it's nonsensical to make this inference.

Why not? Don't you remember before the golden age of exploration in the 15th century, Europe was still under the gloomy shadows of the Dark Ages, where science and technology were being hindered from going forward? It was during this time where Eastern civilizations flourished and were in their heyday. Thus, it was impossible for Europeans to make voyages during this period, as many European countries were drawn into civil wars and their people were suffering from massive penury, famine and also the lethal Black Death. The Chinese Empire was already mighty and powerful during that time, and they had strong diplomatic relationships with many kingdoms scattered throughout Asia. On top of that, steamships aren't invented during that time. They only appeared on this planet in the late 17th century, which was 2 centuries apart. If you said that China couldn't have discovered the Americas due to its longer distance compared to Europe, then Australia couldn't have discovered by the British since Australia is far more distant from the United Kingdom compared to its Asian counterparts, right? A Venetian oil-painting which was painted during this period shows that a Chinese junk arrived at a Venetian port. This implies that the Chinese had succeeded in landing on the European soil even though the former and latter are far apart. Nothing's impossible, right? And as a Chinese, I truly hope that this truth is proven to be authentic.

I really don't believe that Cheng Ho is the one who first discovered  the Americas. I'm quite agree with Jay. Now I just realised how powerful China was during that time.Anyway, as a Chinese, I'm quite proud of the fact.

Zheng He had sailed down the seas for a lot of times, most of the time were in large fleets. If that was just a myth, then how did historians prove that Zheng He found the Americas in the year 1421? How did they know it was the year 1421 and not 1430 or so? This means that they have found some evidence which really show that the Chinese discovered the Americas in the year 1421, and not other years!
