Have you heard of a Central American nation named Costa Rica? What about the Caribbean island of Puerto Rico administered by the U.S.A.? I'm sure you've heard of Las Vegas and also the Argentinian capital city --- Buenos Aires for over a million times, right? Well, these names are all in Spanish, due to centuries of Spanish colonisation. Do you know their meanings? Well, Costa Rica means 'rich coast'. Puerto Rico means 'rich port'. As for Las Vegas, it means 'the meadows'. Buenos Aires means 'good airs'. Interesting, right?

Malaysia means (ahem......) I also don't know that myself. Maybe it means 'Land of the Malays'? Maybe not. 'Land of the Malaysians' is better. The former seems unfair to us --- the descendants of the early immigrants who came here in search of a better living.

Los Angeles, in the state of California, is the second largest metropolis in the U.S.A., only behind New York City. After the Mexican-American War (1846–1848), nearly half of Mexico was lost to the U.S.A., including parts of the modern-day states of Texas, Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico, and Wyoming, and the whole of California, Nevada, and Utah. The city's name is of Spanish origin, which is the official and most-spoken language in modern-day Mexico. The city's original name is El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora la Reina de Los Ángeles de Poricuncula, which literally means The Village of Our Lady the Queen of the Angels of Poricuncula. Whoa! Isn't that a long name? It seems like Americans (and also everyone) nowadays are becoming more and more lazy, since they (and also we) prefer names as short as they can go. For instance, Los Angeles has been abbreviated from the very long original name, but still they prefer a much shorter one --- L.A.! Mmm...... Or is it they wanna save time in this fast-paced world?

The original name of Los Angeles is probably the fifth longest place name in the world. On top of the ranking is Krung thep mahanakhon bovorn ratanakosin mahintharayutthaya mahadilok pop noparatratchani burirom udomratchanivetmahasathan amornpiman avatarnsathit sakkathattiyavisnukarmprasit, which is the poetic name of Bangkok, the capital of Thailand. It is composed of 167 alphabets. When used by the locals, the name is usually abbreviated to "Krung Thep", which means city of angels.
