Alaska is the U.S.A.'s largest state in terms of land area, which the latter purchased from the Russian Empire (which was then a mighty empire before the outbreak of the Russian Revolution in 1917) in 1867. It was proclaimed the 49th state of the Union in 1959 by the U.S. President of that period, President Eisenhower. Alaska is partially situated within the Arctic Circle. It's called Land of the Midnight Sun because during summer months, daytime is longer than the nighttime. Even at midnight, you can still see the sun's rays at the bright-coloured midnight sky.
